MUSIC
It has been a very productive term in the music de-
partment at APS. The innovative new music
curriculum is based on the aural traditions of Kodaly.
This is proving to be very helpful to the overall
development of musicianship and aural training of the
boys. The children have been learning how to support
their voices when they sing and they have also been
learning how written notation relates to what they
hear and play.
Boys and their instrumental teachers have been busily
preparing for forthcoming ABRSM exams and learning
instrumental parts to ensure continual progress within
their respective ensembles. This term, has also seen
the inclusion of some new extra-curricular activities,
namely the early morning training choir for Senior
Choir members and the Theory and Aural Club. Both
activities are proving to be highly successful and are
enabling boys to reach their full potential.
In October, all the boys came together for the school
Harvest Festival which showcased some wonderful
singing and readings.
After half-term, the pre-school and KS1 boys began
preparing for their Christmas production ‘Children of
the World’. Each class enjoyed representing a different
country and revealing how children from different
countries celebrate the festive season.
The Senior Choir have been working extremely hard
this term and represented the school with great
success at The Children’s Society Christmas Concert
which took place at Manchester Cathedral. The boys
made quite an impression and received excellent
feedback from the concert organisers and audience
alike! Miss Kayayan, Director of Music, described their
performance as being “technically polished and
beautifully delivered from the heart!”
The Junior Choir were invited to sing carols at St.
Mary’s Church, Bowdon as part of the Greater
Manchester Police Band Christmas Concert. The boys
enjoyed being part of the event and were particularly
inspired after hearing a live wind band perform!
Counsellor Dylan Butt, Mayor of Trafford, who at-
tended the performance stated: “I would like to com-
plement how the boys sang the carols in support of
the GMP service and also on their excellent behaviour
(notwithstanding the number of bobbies about that
night!)”
On the last day of term, the whole school congregated
at St. Mary’s Church, Bowdon for a festive service of
carols, Christmas songs and readings. The Vocal
Ensemble entranced guests as they entered the
church and the items sung by the Junior and Senior
Choirs were a true reflection of the hard work and
commitment which the boys have shown to music this
term.
