ALTRINCHAM PREPARATORY SCHOOL
DECEMBER 2013
It remains a continuing delight of my role at APS to witness the developments the school continues to undergo as well
as the range of achievements of all boys within the school. It is a pleasure (and perhaps a relief) to listen to the boys
celebrating the achievement of others in the very different fields the school offers. This variety gives the school its
particular energy and excellence. Reading through this Newsletter will give you a glimpse of my meaning.
Sustaining pleasures include the continuing support the school receives from its wonderful Parents’ Society who ran a
very successful Halloween Disco and Christmas Fair as well as providing refreshments at several of our events.
There has also been very generous charitable giving by the school during the term, including donations to “Children in
Need’, support to the ‘Typhoon disaster’ effort, the ‘British Heart Foundation’, the “Wood Street Mission’ and ‘St. Mary’s
Youth Work’. I applaud and thank you all for this.
The Carol Service at St Mary’s last Friday provided a fitting conclusion to a very busy term and it was a pleasure to see
so many parents and Grandparents joining us. Finally, for any whom I don’t see personally, may I wish you a festive
Christmas and a New Year that brings delight, reward and good health.
A Change in Chairman
Recently, Chairmanship of the Governing Body and Board of Directors has changed as Professor Hill has
stepped down from the role he has held for the last 31 years. The Board unanimously voted Mr Andrew
Hill as the new Chairman.
My formal tribute to Professor Hill for his 31 years guiding APS will be given time at the end of this aca-
demic year, however I provide note here that it is typical for Heads to enjoy a certain degree of ambiva-
lence in their relationship with their Chair of Governors. That is not the case here. Professor Hill is held
with the highest regard and esteem by me. It has been a privilege and a pleasure to have him as a Chair;
his insight and wisdom, so readily available for me to access, have been both a source of great comfort
and assistance.
Mr Andrew Hill has served on the Board for 18 years and is also an old boy of the school so he comes to
the post with a substantial background of experience. He has been performing the duties of Acting Chair-
man since August. I am looking forward to continuing working with him, particularly as we complete the
development of Bank Place, our new Early Years Centre of Excellence, in the coming weeks.
