Background Information 4 © Independent Schools Inspectorate 2019 Altrincham Preparatory School – March 2019 1. Background Information About the school 1.1 Altrincham Preparatory School is a non-denominational day school for boys aged from two to eleven. It is administered by a limited company with seven director-governors who are the major shareholders. The school is on three sites: the early years foundation stage (EYFS) centre, for boys aged two to four years, contains the Nursery, pre-school, for boys aged three to four, and Reception and is next to the pre-prep school for boys aged five to six years. The purpose-built prep school is about half a mile away at Marlborough Road, and educates boys aged seven to eleven years. Since the previous inspection the management team has been extended, the facilities for technology have been developed, additional residential courses for pupils have been established and the pre-prep playground has been refurbished. The current headmaster was appointed in September 2018. What the school seeks to do 1.2 The school aims to provide a safe, happy and stimulating learning environment for all its pupils and to instil in them a spirit of respect which is sensitive to the needs of others. It encourages pupils to develop self-discipline, self-confidence and self-esteem and seeks to promote high moral standards and to establish good home-school links. About the pupils 1.3 Pupils come from a range of backgrounds, mostly from white British families with a third from other ethnic backgrounds. The school’s own assessment indicates that the ability of pupils is above average. No pupil in the school has an education, health and care (EHC) plan or a statement of special educational needs. The school has identified 37 pupils as having special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), which include dyslexia and autism spectrum disorder, 31 of whom receive additional specialist help. English is an additional language (EAL) for 9 pupils, whose needs are supported by their classroom teachers. Data used by the school have identified 29 pupils as being the more able in the school’s population, and the curriculum is modified for them.
